Another! Powdered Peanut Butter Review + Giveaway!

Dsc_0010

Dsc_0010

Powdered Peanut Butter?  Are you serious, what is this?  Hungry-Girl raved about it a while back and I saw it on a blog a few weeks ago, so I got my paws on some.

"PB2 has 75% less fat, high protein and still maintains the full flavor of regular peanut butter.  Essentially, the oil is squeezed out of roasted peanuts and what remains is powdered peanut butter, with a touch of sugar (adds MM)."

You can add a touch of water and reconstitute the PB2 into the thickness of peanut butter as you please, or as many have discovered, adding just a touch to a protein shake for that rich peanut buttery flavor.  Or making recipes - desserts, peanut-sauces for chicken - all sorts of stuff!  Damn.  I'm hungry.

Serving size = 2 tablespoons (12 grams)
Servings Per Container: 16

Calories 54.138
Fat Calories 25.44
Total Fat 2.84g
Saturated Fat 0.55g

Sodium 94.4mg
Carbs 3.7g
Dietary Fiber 0.3g

I have to admit, I was excited by the idea of this product because I despise typical peanut butter.  I do not like the texture of "creamy" peanut butter (Skippy is my idea of Oral Hell) but I love peanuts.  The wheels in my head are turning as I sit here trying to think of ways to creatively use this product in cooking for the family, besides figuring out the right water/powder ratio for sandwiches so the kids don't freak, because they do and will.  (I'll let you know.)

My first thought, immediately - was Peanut Butter Fudge.  That's right Beth, put the fat RIGHT BACK WHERE THEY DONE TOOK IT OUT.

Uh, probably not what this product is meant for.  It's obviously a "low-fat" dietary option.

I am not a fat-gram watcher, but I watch everything else - including sugar - and it bothers me slightly that this product has added a gram of sugar to each serving.  It's not much, and for the kids, it's hardly anything in the scope of what they're exposed to - so I'm not going to bitch about it.  (A completely sugar-free version would be super appreciated and purchased.)

I opened the container and snorted the powdery goodness.  I'm a nut.  I got nuts up my nose.Dsc_0013

It smells really, really good.  It's just plain peanuts.  Yum.  I'm not going to tell you that I licked my finger and dipped it in because that would be very immature and disgusting.  Then, I took a spoon full, and added some plain water and mixed it up, like the label suggested, for "peanut butter."Dsc_0014

I hate peanut "butter."  I do.  But this, I was really enticed.  The texture was smoother and lighter, and I could add more water to make it thinner if I wanted to, but I didn't.  I got it in a big gloopy spoonful and tasted.  Yum.

Dsc_0020

It is SO begging me to make all sorts of fudge protein shakes, peanut sauce for shiritaki noodles, or just plain ole PB for sammiches for the kids.  I could easily use this for regular peanut butter.  We already use about half natural peanut butter, but this would be a good alternative even to THAT especially for my boy, who glops about 1/4 cup of the stuff on a slice of bread if left to his own devices.  Keep in mind, one serving of typical peanut butter has about 180 calories and 16 grams of fat, even if its good fat, it's fat.

(may I fist use the disclaimer that Im working and duly embarrassed than in my procrastinating I look as though Im stalking yer blog? :))

I LOVE THIS STUFF.

good or bad

I just do.

filmed a facetime yammering about it as well....cant wait to hear more about your thoughts!

Mmmm....I love this stuff!!! It tastes so peanutty...not sugary or oily like regular peanut butter. It reconstitutes pretty well, better than I thought it would. It's yummy in shakes...you get little itty-bitty peanut bits as you drink it. I have yet to use it in any recipes...but I see sf (or maybe just low sugar) dark chocolate/pb2 truffles in my future. I think it was totally worth buying.

Hey! I just looked online and they sell this at a store in Tiverton. I think I might just head up there tomorrow. I am quite intrigued! Plus, Dr. Borud has me eating mad crazy protein and doubled my multivitamins, since he will be mutilating me in a thousand different ways on May 12th. Oh!! I'm going to be on the internet too..I'll tell you that one later. haha..But They also have the peanut butter powder at a place in Medford, MA..not sure if you're ever there..but Tiverton is right off of Route 24.

I'm going to have to order some. I love peanut butter but hate all the fat and calories. Oh the possibilities!!! I could use it to make all kinds of things. Thanks for the review. Now I'm off searching the net to see if I can afford this or if it goes on my wish list. :-)

Hi Beth,

I gotta try this stuff!!! I Love me some PB!!! Thanks for the heads up.

Doris :o)

That sounds really good to me. I only have PB occasionally because of the fat but this sounds like a good alternative. Is the protein the same as regular PB?

I think I'm going to have to give this stuff a try now that I've read a couple of rave reviews about it. I love your product reviews and they've really helped me to find some good products.

I have been dying to try this stuff....I'm so glad it is good! I'm going to have to order some!

Oooohhh I have to try this! And it is made close to home! I love PB anyway I can get it.....well almost.

This sounds wonderful! Can't wait to try it! THanks for the review.

Woman, you are brave. I love reading your posts, and to share a picture of licking a spoon, BRAVE woman!

I don't like peanut butter either, and had a little giggle over the "Oral Hell" comment. Loved that. Just might try this stuff.

I have this stuff. Bought the required 4 jars of it from their website. Don't recall that "sample" was an option. Not crazy about the stuff reconstituted with water. Not crazy about it reconstituted with Jelly. Haven't tried it in a recipe, but since I have 4 jars of it and it is so darn healthy, I need to figure out a way to use it. Let me know how you end up using it.

Thanks for being the guinea pig on this. Now that it has the MM seal of approval I'm in.

I've been dying to try this stuff! I think it'd work on even my tender new tummy. Hope I win!

I want to try it mixed in sugar free pudding. My friend uses peanut butter mixed in sf pudding before her workouts, and I'm thinking this would work even better! (She uses it in vanilla and says it tastes like a reese's)

ARGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! OK, I'll admit it . . . I am a peanut butter junkie. I love anything peanut butter. Anything. I keep reading about this stuff and have come sooo close to ordering it several times, but a couple of things put me off. 1 is that you have to buy 4 jars. I live alone. They recommend you eat it within 6 months, I think. The other is the price. That's $25 for peanut butter at a pop. I know I'm going to break down soon and just buy the damn stuff . . . lol! Thanks for the review. I’ve bought several things you’ve reviewed and have been very pleased with them. I appreciate all the work you do on this.

You are making me want peanut butter cookies!!! Maybe powdered peanut butter/splenda cookies?!??!?!

hey cybertwin :)

Im all about the tofunooodles and this as a peanut butter sauce as well.

LOVE.

yet can not get my hubby to even TRY.

M.

Wow, I had never heard of this before. I'll have to go to the website and see where I can get it to try. Wondering about the protein content, did I miss it? Actually, this sounds like such a weird concept but I'd be willing to try after your comments!

Okay, I'm interested... I'm gonna have to try this stuff!

Wow! Your post won me over. I just purchased 4 jars online and looking forward to it!!! I'm less than 2 weeks until surgery, and though I'm not required to do liquid diet ahead, I have cut way back on food intake. Thanks for the great information!!
You are an inspiration! Jeanie

I want some of this so freaking bad. I LOVE peanut butter. Seriously, LOVE the stuff.
Crap, now I gotta go make a pb/choc. protein shake. :)

Great review!! Mmmmm...you had to say fudge. lol This stuff looks really interesting and worth a try!

I've been wondering about that stuff. I'm such a peanut butter freak - or was pre-surgery... I wonder if I'd go nuts again. :-) It would be a nice alternative!! A great breakfast on a peice of toast.

First I have to say I'm addicted to your site, i think i've been on it for several hours... reading through every post. I'm 4days post and have gained a world of insight from you, please do not stop!!!

I've added you to my google reader - i'm still in the closet as far as who i've told about the surgery... i figure eventually i'll let the world know, so you'll see no WLS posts on my blog, all about my family... i've neglected it for a while... you're inspiring me to get back on the ball... :)

... off to find a ball.
K

I have been wanting to try that, I am glad to hear that it's good!

I'm skeptical but would try it if I didnt have to purchase a truck load. I still have popcorn from the last reveiw :)

I have never heard of this product, but it sounds awesome! Thanks for the heads up - I am very interested in trying this out.

Gina

I've been hearing all about this stuff on the boards I read. I love peanut butter - eat it every day (I had the DS) as a matter of fact. This, however, strikes me as something I'd put in cookie dough or (if I drank them) a protein shake. I might actually drink a protein shake if I mixed this into it. I'm gonna have to try it.

It looks good... I am going to have to try it. A great way to get in protein for this pregnancy!!!

I am dying to try this! I once ate nothing but PBJ for and entire summer as a kid. I adore peanut butter and my fondness for Better n' Peanut Butter has begun to wan. It is too sweet and not peanutty enough. I think I would eat this as is, in powdered form even. Scary. Mmmm, sprinkled on noodles! Peanut Sauce!! (I am a thai food junkie.) Smoothies that take like reeces peanut butter cups! Holy crap I am getting way to excited. I am trying to keep from order 4 jars online. That just seems kind of extreme. I bet I do before the week is over though.
I could take this to work! The possibilities are endless here. Now if I could just eat bread...

MMMMM....peanut butter. I love me some peanut butter. I lived off of peanut butter for awhile after surgery because it was the only thing I seemed to want (applesauce and cottage cheese just got old fast). Would love to try this!

I have got to try it! I love peanut butter, but it doesn't love me since my surgery. I eat a little on a spoon once in a while, but I must buy some of this and try it!

I love, love, LOVE peanut butter, but generally only do crunchy when eating it off the spoon. This means though, that I never have the smooth stuff on hand for when I'd like to use it in a recipe. This might be the perfect solution! And, I think it would be AWESOME to add it to the sugar free cheesecake flavored pudding! OR, add it to the sugar free fluff stuff that folks make OR even to the ricotta fluff! Yummy!

Sure I want a jar - My favorite shake is chocolate with a Tbsp of peanut butter and some ice. This could replace that fatty PB.
BTW my favorite chocolate brand is Wild Harvest from Shaw's. It is their own organic store brand. I haven't tried as many as you but I think it is the best chocolate I have had. Try some if you can.
Also a review of a review-
Whole Foods only had Spearmint, lemon mint and orange mint. No chocolate.
So far the orange mint is good but it wasn't cold off the shelf so I will try again and it was $1.59 a bottle.
I also bought a few Think Thin bars- The dark choclate was surprisingly good for no sugar.
Today I got some of the EAS crispys and plan of munching later tonight.
WHOLE FOODS is my dream store. I am poor but did get 1/2 lb of the most beautiful bacon in the world. The meat case was like Porn. Fresh and cleaner looking meat than I have ever seen. I had to laugh at Shaw's today when I had to go back to the regular welfare shopping I can afford.

My comment is a recipe, complete with nutritional information-- developed in my very own kitchen lab! Saves almost 50 calories per serving over the version made with regular peanut butter-- but no change in taste! Excellent small lunch for work, and moist enough to be easily tolerated.

Shari's Asian Peanut Chicken

8 oz pre-cooked chicken
1 8oz can water chestnuts, diced
3-4 oz snow peas, diced

Sauce:
10 tbsp. PB2
1 packet Splenda
3 tbsp. soy sauce
2 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 cup water
1 tbsp. chili seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Combine sauce ingredients in microwave safe bowl and nuke about 1 minute on high and blend thoroughly. Pour onto prepared chicken and veggies-- and divide into 6 1/2 cup containers. Serve by heating on high 1 minute (2 minutes if frozen.)

Nutrition:
99 calories
3 g fat
8 g carbs
10 g protein

You don't need the noodles-- this is pouch-filling and savory!

Oh yeah i want some too

I've been wanting to try this too, but that 4-jar requirement was too much for me. Hope I win some, though!

I love your reviews!!! I wondered about this product...if it really tastes like peanut butter. Plus, I worried about the texture...I will have to buy some if I can fins it!!!

I have sampled the PB2 and loved it, but it waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range, especially since I would prob eat a jar in a day or two. If you want the same thing but sugar free you can go to Byrd Mill (http://www.byrdmill.com) and order their peanut flour. It's the exact same thing as PB2 only tons cheaper and no sugar. They have a lower fat option as well I believe. The only thing is that w/o the sugar it won't taste as good plain but it's great for adding to things. From what I've read lots of people add Splenda to it too and it's exactly like PB2. I think on the WW board there's more exact recipes. I don't use Splenda though so I've never tried it. Also, make sure to store it in the fridge :)

R. Thank you! I clicked over to that link - and the first thing I SEE??!

GRIIIIIIIIIIIIITS.

My favorite pre-op breakfast food.

*sigh*

Here's the pnut flour link, it's one pound for like five bux, that's hella cheap: http://www.byrdmill.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Shelf/ASP/Hierarchy/0B.html

Oh My GOSH, this sounds so yummy! I could have me hubby enjoy it too!

Good lawd! I'm gonna have to try this.

I sure hope I like it 'cause I, like Gina, still have a butt load of popcorn left over.

my husband is a peanut butter addict. He eats it right out of the jar. I would love to have him try this to save him so fat and calories. He is 30 pounds from goal and I swear it is the peanut butter that is keeping him from getting there.

Yummy! I have to try this!

Love your reviews, MM. So you say this is pouchworthy, huh? Fling me a jar so I can try it, would you please :)

Oh wow, I've remember reading this on hungry girl and reading it was hard to get.. then just plum forgetting about it. Must have.

Whao Powdered peanut butter. First time I am seeing it. Too bad I don't think it is available here in Singapore or I will definately get some to taste:)

Beth,

I've been waiting for your review. I just ordered some, and will share with my friend. Thanks so much for your time in doing this!

Kristy

K, I'm commenting on your PB2 post. I love all things peanut butter. Thank you for bringing this heaven-in-a-jar to my attention; I might never had known it existed! Can't wait to try it.

Peanut butter is one of my favorite foods. I can't wait to try this. I'll have to see if it is sold anywhere in my area. Of course I can order it online but it's nice to know you can run right out and get some. Thank you for the review.

I would love to try this.....I have a slight addiction to peanut butter so, if I can cheat on it, I will. Thanks for the givaway.....

Post Date: 4/14/08 5:46 pm
OH I am soo going to buy this right now. I have been looking for an alternative to regular peanut butter! I have become addicted to PB on crackers. Unfourtuntly(sp?) I am only allowed 15g fat per day(confession:I have been eating way more than 15g per day). Anyways thank you Melting Mama I love you reviews.

Sounds Great! Haven't seen it anywhere in these parts, but would love love to try it!

It is hard to comment on something you haven't tried before. I would like to try it, I love peanut butter.

This is a really interesting concept. I like the idea that they cut the calories and it sounds like it is so versatile. Cant wait to get creative.

Hi Mama - I would so love to try this stuff. I know I can't find it locally -- living in the boonies and all! I don't have a pouch -- DSer here... but I'd love to try some of this PB - yummy! Great reviews, by the way!
Thanks,
Lola

It takes restraint for me not to eat PB right from the jar (I taught my nieces to do this when they where toddlers. Their mother never forgave me.) This product sounds great and I would love to give it a try.

Thanks for all of your input and inspiration on the boards.

I'll post a question for a free jar: How does it work as a substitute for talcum powder? :)

I am dying to try this stuff. Everyone is talking about it. What is this I hear about samples??

Oh man! Peanut butter crack!! How good is that!!! Can't wait to get my hands on some of this stuff. What a great piece of WLS survival gear. Stick it in your purse, add a little water and stir up some butter. And in those dire emergencies - just eat the powder right out of the jar! Totally excellent.
BJ

Okay, where can I buy some of this at? This is right up my ally. I can just make up what I need right then and there, I can make it "chunky" or "creamy" depending on my mood that day! And I can take it with me on the road or camping.

HEY I WENT TO THE LINK FOR THE PB2, WAS GOING TO PURCHASE SOME OF THE POWDER PEANUT BUTTER, BUT FOR THE REFERAL THEY WANT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. EMAIL IT TO ME AND I WILL PUT YOUR NAME IN FOR THE REFERAL.

Ooooooh pick me!! hehe LOVE PB2!!

Ok ya got me I want to try this but I refuse to snort it I draw the line there. If I dont win a sample of it I would like to see what it costs s off to search ans ee what the price is on here..lay off the snorting woman..lol..

I love your reviews. I would have never thought to try powdered peanut butter. Heck...I didn't even know such things existed! I'm definetly going to have to try some! Thanks MM!

I love peanut butter and really want to try this stuff. My only problem is hubby is in the US Army and we are stationed in Germany and a lot of companies do not deliver to an APO address.

Oh. If you do actually buy some - please use my email as a referral.

meltingmamamelted@gmail.com

I don't know what the reward is. My guess, more PB2. If so, I'll have more contests. I can't eat all of it. LOL.

Beth,

Thanks so much for reviewing this product! I am definitly going to order some. I cannot wait to get it and make Thai chicken with it! Thanks again! Sheryl

It sounds great. I love peanut butter . I will have to try a PB cookie recipe. Love all your reviews. I hate to try something new. I always make my daughter or husband try it first.

Like I have said Melting Mama! You come up with the neatest stuff!! Thank-you. Can't wait to try this.

I so so so love peanut butter. My stomach has been growling even reading reviews if PB2. I can eat it straight out of the jar, in cookies, in main dishes, in sandwiches, in protein shakes, on crackers, on celery..the list goes on and on. I have gone to the site twice wanting to buy some but fear buying so much (what if I don't like it?) Please send some my way. I look forward to peanut porn!

Girl! I've been using this for months! Mix a T with some LF cottage cheese and some stevia or spelenda and it sounds weird, but it makes for a tasty protein filled treat. And yes, it's awesome added to protein shakes.

ooh -me!
I am so intrigued by this stuff!
~Leah

I am dying to get my hands (er.. tongue) on some of this stuff. Pick me!!!

Count me in I wanna snort I mean eat some. ;)

is it your DAUGHTER that is named Tristan?? if so, my cousin's name is Tristan - she's female - very rare - usually it's a boys name... my aunt never told her husband (now ex) that the idea for the name came from the scrolling credits on General Hospital. hahaha

okay, now gimme some PB2!!!

;)

Well I didn't get the chocolate which is just as well since I live in Arizona and it would have melted in the mail. So I think that powdered peanut butter would be lovely. Please pick me lady! I love your blog. You are too funny.

I think that I will (if I win a jar of PB2) add it to my morning oatmeal for starters and use it to get my dog to eat in the morning, sprinkle an itsy bit on her chow, and try it reconstituted in my PB cookie recipe:
1 cup PB
1/2 cup splenda fer bakin" (1 cup sugah)
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
350 degrees fer 8-10 minuteses
and see if that yields yummy cookies as it did with "the real thing".
Do I win?

I love your posts, can't stay away from your blog and read everything you post on OH. You are a real person, I mean you tell it like it is and I love that. I am the same way!! I would love to try this PB!! My kids love PB toast so I think it would be great for them was well!! Keep blogging, you keep so many entertained!

One of the ladies in my WW group last year brought some in for us to try, but I had forgotten about it until you posted! I requested it at my local grocery, but they told me they can't get it. :P

I'll definitely be ordering some, and using Shari's recipe! We're all huge peanut sauce fans here at home, and my favorite post-op meal out has been an order of chicken satay at a little restaurant that makes awesome peanut sauce. They sell it, too, so I often have a jar, but this would be great for larger batches. I'm thinking dinner party... Mmm!

Hi Beth,

I'm not sure this is where I comment for the NEW PB 2 give away (12 jars)... but as for a recipe... I got nothin' I'd probably do the same as you and lick it off my finger... as for a bribe...?? I may be up in Northern Boston this weekend and I could bring you something??? I have no frigin' idea WHAT! But something...LOL

Doris :o)

This is something I would not have tried with out a review. Now I am thinking though, think other nut butters will come along? Right now my favorite is almond butter.
Thanks Beth for another great review.
Meridith

I was thinking of going to Tiverton,RI too. I am going to RI this weekend anyway. I would much rather win some from you though.

Spin the wheel and pick me!!!

If I had PB2, I'd make high protein peanut butter pudding for bkfst or a pre-workout snack -

1 package sugar free vanilla pudding or chocolate pudding

2 cups of mootopia skim milk (14g protein per 8oz)

2 tsp benefiber

1/4c PB2

Separate into approx 4 1/2c portions and yum :)

I LOVE peanut butter but this stuff kind of sounds gross. I guess I'd have to taste it. I like the idea of less fat though cause the lower fat peanut butters on the market taste like ass. I would definitely give it a try if I won a bottle.

My son Ian has a food allergy to of all things: CORN! So what am I going to do with my PB2? I'm going to make peanut butter for him. It's one of his fav foods and since almost all PB has corn of some sort in it this is one he can have. So my son is going to have all things peanut butter again. PB2 sandwiches, pb2 cookies, pb2 buckeyes! Anything and everything that I can think of. I'm making with this PB2. I will reunite my child with PB once again.

Thank in advance from not only me but from Ian as well :)

Hello Mama! to be honest, I haven't tried the PB2, but it sounds very interesting. Your review makes me want to have a PB& sugar free J sandwich right now! You're the bomb!

I would love a jar of PB2! No use for a full case, nor the room to store it for that matter.

Pick me, choose me, love me :)

OK I think you need to look at that medication again- This utube is a little crazy-even your hair is crazy in this video.
I will bribe but I can top it all- I will babysit ALL 4 kids for a jar or 2.
You can't put a price on that!!!
Oh and I have never cooked with PB so no recipes - I just smear it on stuff and make shakes.

Again - Think overnight babysitter and nookie - Come on give me a jar and all your dreams can come true.

I've been hearing about this stuff and have no hope of getting it where I live.
Saving 50cal for satay noodles doesn't bother me so much as making the consistancy I want or adding to smoothies.
Real PB has been glogging me blender and I cut my finger trying to get it off the blades. Please help this dire situation MM :)

Ummmmm....yeah. Pick me! Why? Cuz I have a cool psuedo name. And I love me some peanut butter. I must try this stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gotta say AGAIN how FAB you look in your frames...we did a tastetest last night with my skeptical father in law.

HE ADORED IT-----much to his shock and delight :)

OGM peanutbuttery goodness.... The fat is gone... No dumping.... you can't get much better than that...

Now for the bribery.... Did I spell that right.. I'll be your BFF for an entire day if you would just PICK ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know lame, but if it get's your attention ... LOL

We (me & the baby) would love to try us some PB2. I found this recipe online and am going to try it someday... If you make it - let me know how it tastes!!!

PB2 Cheesecake

½ C SF Vanilla wafer crumbs
1 8oz pkg. light cream cheese
1 8oz pkg. FF cream cheese
½ C FF sour cream
½ C light ricotta cheese
¾ C PB2
¼ C FF milk
¼ C Splenda brown sugar
½ C Splenda
2 tsp vanilla
¾ C egg beaters

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Add a pan of hot water to the oven to add steam to the oven as the cheesecake bakes. Spray a 9” springform pan or a deep casserole dish, with cooking spray. Pour the cookie crumbs into the pan and shake around to coat the sides and bottom of pan. In a food processor add the cream cheeses, the sour cream, and the ricotta cheese. Process until smooth. Add in the PB2 and the milk and process until it’s incorporated into the batter well, scraping down the sides as needed. Mix in the splenda’s and the vanilla until blended. Slowly pour the egg beaters in through the tube as the processor is running and process until well blended and smooth. Pour into pan. Bake at 300 for 50 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave the cake in the oven for an additional 30 minutes. It will be soft in the center, but will set up as it cools. Allow cake to come to room temperature. Chill in the fridge for 8 hours or overnight allowing to chill completely.

8 servings= 175 cals and 11g protein
10 servings=140 cals and 8.6g protein
12 servings= 116cals and 7g protein

I NEED some of this, yo.

Add some to some vanilla SF pudding and vanilla protein powder (don't gag...it's not that bad, the key is to mix the protein with the milk before adding the pudding mix....I put it in the blender! lol)

and add some shaved chocolate on top (or add some chocolate chips) for a nice peanut buttery chocolate pudding (possible protein) treat.

YUMMMMM about the peanut sauce. I'm 50% thai, so I might have to get some just for that. I'm a peanut butter addict too! I add them to toasted Kashi waffles...right when it's toasted so it's nice and oooey gooey melted....Good schtuff right there!
