Today's plans are waiting for the nice Comcast installer to re-install Comcast internets. If anyone out there is keeping tabs? This may be the fourth time we have swapped back. Let me tell you why? Verizon is always a bit "cheaper," and promises faster service, and we always packaged things together - but the service to my actual house and internet is horrific. Because I know everything (at the same time I claim to know nothing!) I know this is because our home phone lines NEED TO BE UPDATED AND REINSTALLED, as they are from 1969 and they make the internet come into the house like 1969. It would be very fast at times, but at others, slow and as soon as we use the phone, it's like party-line central. Echoes, drops, and completely cuts out at times. I found myself hanging up and calling people back ON THE CELL PHONE because my house phone sounded too much like a cell phone. (Weird.) So, we're getting the internet off of the phone line again, which should solve part of the problem, though we don't have the house phone line anymore.
It's done! I think we're cured!
1 packet Diet Hot Chocolate, Espresso, Skim Milk.
Entirely too many "tastes" of cheese while making death by mac + cheese for tomorrow. I don't know how much I ate. Probably like two actual ounces. Can't help it. I always eat the damn cheese. I always pay for it, I dump on more than a few bites of full-fat cheese. Not an "OMG, I'mma die!" heart-thumping sleepy dump, but a "uuuuugh, I need to not eat more than a few bites of cheese," dump.
Green salad, romano cheese. 1/2 oatmeal cookie.
Jonathans' Munchin' Mix (Sprouted Adzuki Beans, Lentils + Peas) This company needs a WEBSITE RE-DESIGN, ASAP. Makes me kind of wish I knew how. I love their sprouts, and it's local too.
What in the hell did we all do before the internet?! For real? It is sick!
I have not even followed by daily eating routine because I couldn't "write it down."
"Beth, get a fucking pencil."
I'm a *scatterbrain, we are fully aware of this condition. *Beth, without the addition of four children, a spouse, and a broken byparse, can't even get from point A to point B without forgetting that she was starting this sentence about a what? A PENCIL! And, the simple fact that I cannot remember to do anything, ever.
Now, add in that I am taking drugs, and that they are making my pupils shrink. What were we talking about?
My internet doesn't work, so I can't eat. Does this make any sense to you?
Weight - 162 lbs. +2 WTF? But, whatever. This is how my body rolls. I didn't mean to say it like that.
Wow, flashback! This from April 2007. I deleted the YT account this was initially linked to, but I forgot I have an expoTV account for product reviews only, and this was the only video that I loaded there. I found my fake-blond, tanned self (WTF?) there and immediately got the urge to head to the tanning bed.
It's probably a good thing that Beth doesn't have credit cards. Because I want these.
And, I would love them in black, and silver, or just black. It's now officially summah, and I could use a pair of summah shoes. Would I be more of a geek if I own a pair of actual crocs? Awesome.
2/3 c medium-grind bulgur (next to the rice in most supermarkets) 1 2/3 c water 1/3 c fresh lemon juice 12 oz precooked peeled or thawed frozen shrimp, coarsely chopped 3/8 tsp black pepper 1 c diced cucumber 1 pint grape tomatoes 1/2 c chopped red onion 1/2 c chopped parsley 2 Tbsp olive oil 1/2 c (2 oz) crumbled feta cheese 1/4 tsp salt
1. In a saucepan, combine bulgur, water, and 2 tablespoons lemon
juice; bring to a boil. Cover and simmer until tender, about 15
minutes. Drain and let cool. 2. Place shrimp in large serving bowl. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Let stand for 5 minutes. 3. Stir in cucumber, tomatoes, onion, parsley, oil, and cheese.
Add salt, remaining lemon juice, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon pepper and
toss. 4. Stir in cooled bulgur. Divide evenly into four salad bowls.
Makes four servings.
Per serving: 301 calories, 12 g fat (3.5 g saturated), 513 mg sodium, 27 g carbs, 6 g fiber, 24 g protein.
This would be a perfect packable lunch, scoop into appropriate servings and
bring to work, or have it ready to go. This is something you could eat
further post-op after weight loss surgery, as your nutritionist about
when you are cleared for foods like this.
As for modifications? I would double the cheese and veggies, add
kalamata olives and cut out the shrimp. (I don't eat seafood, I'm odd.
I know. But this looked so good. -MM)
1 packet sugar-free cocoa mix in unsweetened soy milk cappuccino
Green salad, parm cheese + zero calorie dressing
Two bites of a limp protein bar for a review.
1/4 cup part skim ricotta cheese, parm cheese + 2 canned tomatoes
Exercise
Heading out now for a walk, if I can stop bitching at my facking internet, which has been useless all day long,
WHY?
VONAGE SUCKS.
I had to disconnect it entirely to get an internet connection BACK today. This means, our "house phone" is not in service right now. Thank goodness for that cell phone, eh, Bob? My phone WENT DEAD mid-conversation, and my mother thinks I had a seizure. THIS IS NOT OKAY. /end rant
Numbering intake will be infinitely easier. Especially since right now I am double inputting, writing it here and then also mostly at The Daily Plate (if I remember) for caloric accountability.
It is just that I am not a three meal a day kind of girl. Even three meals and two snacks? You can't hold me to it. I won't do it.
It is not possible. My functioning stomach pouch holds about three ounces of solid food.
Eating three ounces of solid food three times a day and calling it "enough" is calling me starved. I am willing to bet that my body is sort of telling me that right now, in it's very special way, and will continue to tell me that.
Obviously, aside from the first year post operatively, I never ate that little, I started "graze"-eating which is frowned upon and guilt-inducing in our community BIG-TIME as soon as I was able to.
This is not to say that I had my hand in a bag of CHEETOS. Most of the time, I would graze on appropriate things, or just bites, licks and tastes of things. (Which I still do. I will never deny myself "one bite," but I do have a "three bite rule" if I want something that bad.)
It could have been Cheetos, it wouldn't have taken much. It could have been just a stack of saltine crackers. Or, too many of anything over the course of a day. Too much of anything is not good. Especially in the second year post-op, I found myself digging through cabinets, SEARCHING for simple sugars. Because I didn't typically ever purchase that kind of food, I was always left picking through whatever we had - grazing on food that I might not even care to eat typically - because My Blood Sugar Was Fucked Up All The Time!
I would eat through a stack of crackers over the course of a day - just because it maintained me. Or, dig through a bag of "marshmallow cereal," eating what part you ask? Can you imagine what would happen if I did this today? (Just as a visual, I didn't. This is from the day I had indulged in a piece of sugar-candy.)
I was probably cycling so fast on low blood sugars from morning to night, that I had no idea. It probably wasn't until I found myself shaking in front of the cabinet, eating granulated white sugar out of the 5 lb. bag when I realized there might be something wrong.
I must admit to you. After raving about the PB2? I have yet to cook with it. I am now determined to at least try. It's just that l love me some PB2 in a smooth, creamy shake, and why mess with perfection? Here are just some recipes that are on the PB2 website.
If you happen to try these, or any of the recipes featured, or if you whip up your own? Show us what you made.
If you are confused by this - "PB2" it's Powdered Peanut Butter. I reviewed it a while back:
"PB2 has 75% less fat, high protein and still maintains the full flavor
of regular peanut butter. Essentially, the oil is squeezed out of
roasted peanuts and what remains is powdered peanut butter, with a touch of sugar (adds MM)."
You can add a touch of water and reconstitute the PB2 into the
thickness of peanut butter as you please, or as many have discovered,
adding just a touch to a protein shake for that rich peanut buttery
flavor. Or making recipes - desserts, peanut-sauces for chicken - all
sorts of stuff! Damn. I'm hungry. Serving size = 2 tablespoons (12 grams) Servings Per Container: 16

I have to admit, I was excited by the idea of this product because I
despise typical peanut butter. I do not like the texture of "creamy"
peanut butter (Skippy is my idea of Oral Hell) but I love peanuts. The
wheels in my head are turning as I sit here trying to think of ways to
creatively use this product in cooking for the family, besides figuring
out the right water/powder ratio for sandwiches so the kids don't
freak, because they do and will. (I'll let you know.)
My first thought, immediately - was Peanut Butter Fudge. That's
right Beth, put the fat RIGHT BACK WHERE THEY DONE TOOK IT OUT.
Uh, probably not what this product is meant for. It's obviously a "low-fat" dietary option.
I am not a fat-gram watcher, but I watch everything else - including
sugar - and it bothers me slightly that this product has added a gram
of sugar to each serving. It's not much, and for the kids, it's hardly
anything in the scope of what they're exposed to - so I'm not going to
bitch about it. (A completely sugar-free version would be super
appreciated and purchased.)
I opened the container and snorted the powdery goodness. I'm a nut. I got nuts up my nose.
It
smells really, really good. It's just plain peanuts. Yum. I'm not
going to tell you that I licked my finger and dipped it in because that
would be very immature and disgusting. Then, I took a spoon full, and
added some plain water and mixed it up, like the label suggested, for
"peanut butter."
I hate peanut "butter." I do. But this, I was really enticed. The
texture was smoother and lighter, and I could add more water to make it
thinner if I wanted to, but I didn't. I got it in a big gloopy
spoonful and tasted. Yum.
Product: PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter
Purchased: Sample from Bell Plantation. To purchase, click here, tell them "Melting Mama" sent you. They want an email for referral: [email protected]. (Just so you know, I have not been paid for this. I like the product. I did get freebies, but I gave them away in a contest. :) .... )
Pros: 75% less fat than typical oil containing peanut butters, good for recipes, smells really good, not too bad up your nose.
Cons: Hard to blow out of your nostril once stuck in there a while, that pesky one gram of sugar per serving.
Pre-breakfast (I have decided, this needs an alternate name. I might just start numbering meals again. I never eat B L D. It's usually 1 - 6 - or eight, if I am up from 5am to 12am like today might be- feedings.) Unsweetened soy cappuccino
Lunch - Vegetable Tofu Soup + Veggie Spring Rolls (2) (SWOON! THE LOVE! I haven't had these in so long.)
Snack - Salad - Romano Cheese - Walden Farms Dressing
Dinner - Leftover Vegetable Tofu Soup + Spring Rolls (2)
Snack - PB2 Shake.
1 scoop Syntrax Sweets Chocolate Truffle, 2 TBSP PB2, 4 oz soy, 8 oz ice, 1 oz SF syrup
"Finally, an Affordable, High Quality, High Protein, Low Carb
Meal Replacement is Available So That Everyone Can Comply with Their Doctor's
Orders." So says Bariatric Advantage in my email just now.
I am passing this along because of two things - #1, You know I plan to review two of the flavors in this list, ASAP. I am super-excited about the CHOCOLATE MINT and Unflavored whey.
I am going to toss a couple (probably three) in my shopping cart when re-order my vitamins. Yum. I have to get through the icky Wal-Mart Vat-o-Protein I have here. I'm doing it - though - I'm drinking protein - and I have to say - it's working. Shakes work. These ones, pack a meal replacement in though, and I am in need of quality nutrition.

*NOTE: By definition, Meal Replacements must provide 100 percent of the RDA for 23 vitamins and minerals in a daily dose. Products that are purely protein, or protein with a few simple ingredients (a flavor, a sweetener, lecithin, etc) are not Meal Replacements.
This includes products that may contain a small number of other
nutrients. Unfortified protein products cannot do this and are therefore not Meal Replacements.
I emailed the neurologist re: the B-vitamin levels a few days ago:
"While I have your attention - too - a quick question?
When in for testing after seizures of unknown origin - are thiamine
levels checked? Would my levels be available online? I cannot find a
thiamine level in any of my bloodwork - anywhere."
It is highly unlikely that your thiamine level would have been checked
as a matter of routine after having had a seizure, since thiamine
deficiency is not generally an issue with seizures except in rare
circumstances, such as if doctors were suspecting that you were an
alcoholic or were suffering from chronic malnutrition.
I asked him because I have symptoms that fit these issues, and have, for years. But, I don't know why.
Is there a specific reason why you are concerned about thiamine?
I guess maybe he thought I was a closet drinker or something - which is so far from the truth it's funny.
Today he is ordering a B1 test at a lab close to me, because he says:
"I do not see any record of a thiamine level for you. Why don't you let me
know where you would normally get your blood drawn and I can place an
order for it to be done at your convenience? That will settle the issue
fairly easily."
Although we're both pretty sure it's going to be normal, since my other levels have been within normal limits, and nothing has been that easily red-flagged.
Hopefully he will set up a standing lab order so that I can get in at any time.
I'm planning to get in to my old PCP's lab tomorrow for a quick blood draw, he called it in. Like I said, I assume my levels are indeed normal, but this will be another item scratched off the list. It would just be a simple cure.
(I had a complex partial seizure after I wrote this post. Bob told me that I did the "I need sugar" charade.)
Weight 161 lbs. *Celebratory dance! This a "new" weight! (Not a *new new weight, but a somewhat new weight. I think you get it.)
Breakfast - 3 slices RTE Bacon + 1 oz boiled chicken (I had a whole chicken in the crockpot overnight for soup, it smelled good) both of these items were going in the soup.
11am Very Early Lunch - 1/2 cup homemade chicken + barley soup.
3pm Very Early Dinner - Repeat of lunch, plus two bites of my husband's hamburger patty.
6pm Snack - 1/2 of a Wicked GOOD protein bar. Not telling.
Mall walked for about an hour, (but only a bit of it was actual "laps") because I thought it was going to rain today, and the man was home, but it didn't rain until late, so I walked outside too. 90 minutes total, about one good hard hour of walking, about two minutes "wogging." OMG, that's so difficult at this point. I hope to look back at this and think "Wow, I used to be such a wuss."
I pretended to be a photographer today (because I am really trying to decide if I am willing to sell my soul, spleen and kidneys to go to school for this, that is what it would take, and it's just not going to happen in the way I would want to have it occur) and took a billion-ty obnoxious photos of a parade. We weren't even planning to be there. It just so happened that we were, and, was a gorgeous day! The whole set will be at Flickr in a few.
I figure practice is practice, regardless of what the subject is or why. Except, something about my Aperture program is wonky and won't work, so I wasn't able to play with any of these and fix them. So, WYSIWYG.
Weight - 163 lbs.
Breakfast - None
Snack - Iced Soy Cappuccino
Lunch - (Out) Small Greens only salad with REAL blue bheese dressing (Made me dump terribly.)
Snack - One half Atkins Caramel Advantage Brownie Bar
Dinner - Two bites hamburger patty, 1/2 hot dog (GACK! GACK! GACK! I have been tasting this for hours.)
Exercise - Lots of walking at the parade/beach, at least 3 miles or so, and an hours' walk with sweat on my own later today, with a kid on a bike, I considered the "wog" about three times and started and quit. I think I will find a less populated area to "wog."
Did you see?! It's finally up and running! You are looking at http://www.meltingmama.net. It took two knowledgeable helpers, and Typepad Support, and many days - and what you see - is the same site - with a shorter name. Whew.
Lunch - Green salad, romano cheese, zero calorie dressing, 1/2 Sweet + Salty Bar (They're nearly gone now. He is SO not allowed to shop at a bulk store.)
Snack - Two bites of Bob's grease burger while walking in Plymouth. I had already eaten my meal right before leaving for this impromptu trip. I avoided ice cream. :) I did eat the square of chocolate from the top of the boy's soft serve. We made them walk a few miles though. (Photos uploadin'.)
Dinner - Nearly all of the guts of a Wendy's Single - no bread - but some greasy ass fries, on the way out of grocery shopping. I was "stahving." Always the excuse for the Wendy's Burger.
Weight - I haven't gone downstairs to weigh in today, because OMG the baby is still sleeping, and it's 8:30am. This child hasn't slept past 6:30am, in, what, ever? I wasn't going to wake her up so that I could see that I was exactly the same as yesterday or a pound heavier. But, WTF, I still got up at 6am?
No plans for today. Mr. MM is working a long ass day, and won't be home until very late.
We didn't end up doing much of anything, but we did get a walk in.
I sent my mother to pick up my Topamax prescription, I ran out today. I didn't have the energy to walk up and get it, because it makes me a little bit stupid.
I am lucky I didn't actually walk all the way to the pharmacy. I wouldn't have had the money to pick it up.
She just shelled out $250.00 for my stupid dope. This $250? Will. last. me. 20. DAYS.
I can't afford to take this seizure medicine. I need a job to pay for the medicine.
I just wrote her a check. Now, my grocery money is buying my dope. This is ridiculous.
The reason it is so high? We're supposed to buy my drugs via mail order, and the price is higher if we don't utilize this option, and the price of Topamax is much higher than the other drugs I've tried, even though I bought those AT the pharmacy too. In fact, we're paying full price.
The mail order program takes 7-10 days to ship, after you send in your RX. Surely it's only meant for maintenance drugs, because you can't get anything instantly.
We really didn't pay attention to this before because didn't ever buy long term medications.
A new non-mal-absorptive, less invasive form of bariatric surgery is likely to be used on young adults in the states very soon. This procedure, doesn't remove any important bits of intestine, it merely staples off a section and creates a pouch.
In South America, a study was just completed on a dozen teens, aged 14-17, who all had this newer endoscopic surgery instead of a more typical roux en Y Gastric Bypass procedure as a means of losing weight. It worked, which means, won't be long before it's offered (if it isn't already - I haven't looked that hard yet - I may be wrong!) to kids in the US.
Per-Oral Suturing as a Potential Treatment for Adolescent Obesity
Twelve adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 underwent the
Endolumial Vertical Gastroplasty (EVG) procedure. Patients had an
average baseline BMI of 38.1 with weights ranging from 80 to 158 kg.
The study found that all patients lost weight. Between baseline and six
months past procedure, the mean BMI dropped to 27.8.
"For this technique to be successful, patients must also commit to
adopt a rigorous post-surgery diet and exercise program that is
monitored by a nutritionist," said Roberto Fogel, MD, with the
department of gastroenterology, Hospital de Clinicas Caracas in
Venezula. "Endolumial suturing procedures seem to be a safe potential
alternative to more invasive surgeries or for use when diet and
exercise regimes have failed.
"Potential Remedies To Obesity And Its Health Threats."
ScienceDaily 22 May 2008.
My gut reaction (ha ha) is that this is a step in a better direction, right?
Better than allowing young, developing bodies to have a potentially devastating RNY. What says you?
