Video - Institute of Medicine Vitamin D Rebuttal
12/11/2010
"On November 30, 2010, the Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) released their updated recommendations for vitamin D (and calcium), which has sent shockwaves of disappointment through natural health community.
According to the FNB, the new recommended daily allowance (RDA) for pregnant women and adults up to 70 years of age is the same as that for infants and children â a measly 600 IU's. This despite the overwhelming evidence showing that vitamin D is extremely important for a wide variety of health conditions besides bone health, and that most people need about ten times this amount or more."
(Keep in mind these levels were set for NORMAL digestion, NOT someone with a malabsorptive weight loss surgery procedure. -MM)
We propose Vitamin D Deficiency Syndrome (VDDS) exists when 25(OH)D levels of less than 50 ng/mL are found in patients with two or more of the following conditions: osteoporosis, heart disease, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, certain cancers, depression, chronic fatigue, or chronic pain. VDDS is more common among dark skinned races, the aged, and those who avoid the sun.
Are you Vitamin D deficient? Many obese individuals start out low, and many post weight loss surgery patients become very low. (Raises hand.)
