Chike High Protein Coffee Review - Coffee Flavored Whey Protein Isolate

So here's the thing.  I've been had.

Chike b&w logo (web) copy 4 BLOGGERThe Chike boys professional purveyors of proteins sent me this product when it was just a baby prototype.  I was tricked.  There was trickery!  I wasn't told what it was, just to trust that I might like it and would you please give us your feedback on it?

I reviewed it, once or twice, even made a bad video review that you will never ever see.  The Chike boys took the feedback to the Place Where Protein Is Made and created Chike High Protein Coffee!

They asked me to review the now final product, because I Have A Thing For Coffee And It's Quite Serious.

Chike High Protein Coffee is a 20 gram whey protein supplement with the equivalent of two shots of espresso, vitamins and minerals. Chike High Protein Coffee is currently sold in individual-serving sized packets.

The most notable thing about this product -- is it's sugar content.  I expected it to have more sugar than it does in order to sweeten appropriately, but it's only got two grams.

INGREDIENTS: Whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, natural and artificial flavor, sunflower oil, instant coffee, maltodextrin, polydextrose, corn syrup solids, magnesium phosphate, cellulose gum, soy lecithin, dextrose, salt, sodium caseinate, mono- and diglycerides, potassium phosphate, acesulfame K, calcium phosphate, medium chain triglycerides, sucralose, ascorbic acid, zinc sulfate, alpha-tocopherol acetate, tocopherols added to protect flavor, niacinamide, caffeine, L-selenomethionine, reduced iron, calcium pantothenate, copper gluconate, manganese sulfate, vitamin A palmitate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, chromium chloride, biotin, potassium iodide, sodium molybdate, phytonadione, vitamin D3, vitamin B12.

In it, you find a blend of mostly whey protein isolate and some whey protein concentrate, totaling 20 grams of protein.

Chike High Protein Coffee is  sweetened with a blend of poly-dextrose, maltodextrin, corn syrup solids and sucralose.    But, for a protein powder containing two shots of instant espresso, I am surprised that it only requires two total grams of sugar to sweeten and contains nine total carbohydrates.  You find that it's got 2.5 total fat grams, one of which is saturated.

The protein powder looks like a vanilla base with specks of instant coffee.   And that's exactly what it smells like, too.

I used the Easy-to-Follow Directions and added my Chike High Protein Coffee to cold water in a shaker cup.  I also added a very small amount of unsweeteened soy milk, because that is what I add to coffee.

I shook the shaker cup like I meant it, and poured the protein coffee into a glass because I knew I had to show it to you people, and frankly, it was sacrilegious to photograph one company's protein in another company's shaker bottle.  Just saying.

And, She's Purdy. this here protein is puuuurdy.

Mixed well, Chike High Protein Coffee looks like a glass of iced coffee, you could pour this over ice and fake out anyone else sipping and iced coffee since there are no detectable protein issues.   #hoorayforthesmallvictories

After shaking, the Chike High Protein Coffee was totally smooth, with zero clumps or protein clots.  I think you all know how I feel about clots of protein in my glass.  Have I mentioned that my husband, also a gastric bypass patient, actually Enjoys The Clots, and drinks his protein shakes clumpy on purpose?  *insert my complete textural aversion here, complete with hand motions and squealing*

Truthfully, I took this photo nearly an hour ago, and while sitting here assembling links for this post, the protein shake has NOT separated or settled.  There are no indications of clumps or separation.  I love you?

Smell -

Because I am sensory overload girl and I sniff my protein shakes.  Chike High Protein Coffee smells like a vanilla latte, or what I remember a vanilla coffee smelling like.  It's a sweetish vanilla base with a touch of coffee aroma.

Texture -

The first thing I notice about this protein actually in my mouth  is that it has a perfectly smooth mouth feel and undetectable protein grit, grain or texture.  Chike, I love you for this?

Taste -

This protein tastes like an iced sugar-free vanilla latte.  Granted, I drink my espresso drinks at least four times stronger than this, I like it.  It's *swishing in my mouth now* quite perfect, actually.  I suppose you could say it's sort of like coffee milk, but with a stronger espresso taste, but not TOO strong that it knocks your socks off.  Chike High Protein Coffee would be an awesome option for someone who enjoys a light and sweet coffee.

That said, I'd drink this as is, mixed with just water.  It's that good.  But, I would also use it as a base for a frozen coffee drink, maybe with ice cubes, a splash of milk, a teaspoon of cocoa powder -- in the blender.  You could do any number of recipes with this protein powder, it's well-suited for options.

Some of the suggestions on the Chike website would be magical with this protein in place of the Chocolate Chike -  or even WITH it -

• Morning Mocha Smoothie

• Chike Mocha Coffee

• Guilt Free Hot Chocolate

• Peppermint Hot Chocolate

• Thin Mint Madness Smoothie

• Black & White Cookie Shake

• Chike Chocolate Mousse

• Chocolate, Peanut Butter & Oatmeal Shake

OH, Oh, OH! I know! Sugarfree Salted caramel syrup. YES. This! THIS.   Chike High Protein Coffee, plus -

Oh, this is so going in my mouth with chocolate and mint, and hot, and cold, and YES.  All of these.

If you come up with a kick-ass recipe suggestion with Chike, they wanna know about it.
